Stop Coming (on the wall) Twice
2025
stop signs mounted on wall
each 22 x 22in
Two ready-made stop signs are mounted upside down in reference to the tradition of hanging the Chinese character for fortune, 福(fú),
upside down during Chinese New Year. In Mandarin, the words for ‘inverted’ and ‘to come’ are homophones; creating a symbolic gesture for fortune to come.
The title of the work is a direct, deadpan translation of the objects; emphasizing the structural yet elastic nature of language and semiotics through wordplay.
